The University of Sydney is currently undergoing a Campus Improvement Program to ensure it evolves to meet the needs of 21st century students, while maintaining its history and heritage. Part of this redevelopment is an exciting new facility located within the health precinct of the Camperdown campus.

The nine-storey building was made possible by a $35 million donation from the Susan and Isaac Wakil Foundation. It’s the largest donation to the university since it was founded in 1850, and will provide innovative clinical simulation spaces, contemporary research areas, and a multi-service health care clinic.

The building will also co-locate the nursing, midwifery and health sciences faculties, as well as the Sydney Medical School which is currently located at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital. Designed by Billard Leece Partnership and Diller Scofidio + Renfro, the design is modern and open, with a smart use of space.

In addition to a number of fire engineered solutions, the building will feature gender-neutral sanitary facilities. As the Building Code of Australia doesn’t recognise the need for gender-neutral facilities, MBC has worked with experts in gender equality to act as a vanguard for intelligent design and social equality.

The project is currently running to schedule, with the superstructure taking shape in early 2019. Above ground services, fitout works and external cladding will follow. Our focus on efficiency and transparency throughout the project will ensure a safe and compliant facilities that realise the university’s vision.
